The San Francisco 49ers had an 11-player draft class in April to bring in some young talent to a roster that needed it. Six of those picks went to the defensive side of the ball.
They had rookie minicamp run from May 9 to May 10, with OTAs next on the docket. That is slated to begin on May 27 and wrap up on June 5. This will allow everyone to practice and meet together as guys fight to make the 53-man roster.
Rookies will be fighting to show their new coaches they are ready to make an impact in Year 1, and third-round pick Upton Stout is no different.
While he fights to make an imprint on the depth chart, his former cornerbacks coach Da'Von Brown spoke about him during an interview.
Stout isn't known for being a quiet and reserved type of player and Brown revealed that when speaking to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
He said, "Every day wasn’t cream and cookies, right? I’d be lying to you if I told you that.”
Upton Stout is an Outspoken Player
Brown also praised Stout for his passion and commitment to the game. He added that Stout missed six games in 2023 due to a shoulder injury and was on the training staff as he looked to get back on the field.
"He was like, ‘I’m going to put in the time and your job is to get me out on that football field. So if I show up here at 6 a.m., I expect y’all to be ready to rock and roll. Upton is always going to tell you how he feels."Da'Von Brown
It's known that Stout will talk trash to players on the field, but he won't hesitate to let his teammates know if they messed something up.
That mindset helped Stout be the shortest (5-foot-8) and lightest (181 pounds) cornerback drafted in the 2025 NFL draft.
In 45 college games, he posted 166 total tackles, 12 TFLs, 15 pass deflections, and six interceptions. The 49ers certainly believe in his talents since they made him a top 100 pick.
He will look to bring this intensity into the 49ers' secondary, and it is something that his teammates and coaches may catch on to early.
