The NFL is slated to release the entire 18-week regular season schedule on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET. This offseason has been a whirlwind for the 49ers, but they are looking to turn things around in 2025.
There have been leaks about the schedule, and one has emerged about the 49ers' Week One opponent. According to Dave Mahler, there are reports that San Francisco will open up at home against the Seattle Seahawks -- and former QB Sam Darnold.
49ers Will Reportedly Open Up Against the Seattle Seahawks
Darnold spent the 2023 season in San Francisco as a backup to Brock Purdy before signing a one-year deal with the Vikings in 2024. He put up career-highs in completions (361), completion percentage (66.2), passing yards (4,319), and passing touchdowns (35) with the Vikings.
That led to him landing a monster deal with the Seahawks, inking a three-year, $100 million contract that includes $52 million guaranteed. In his opening presser with Seattle, Darnold gave credit to Purdy for "unlocking" his game and allowing him to hit a new level.
Even though he only started in one game for the 49ers, his short stint there allowed him to hit a different gear, and now he will face off against his former team twice a year.
The 49ers have won six of their last seven games against Seattle and hope to keep the positive momentum going to start the season. San Francisco has had a ton of moving parts over the last couple of months, so starting the season off against a division rival is never easy.
We'll have to see if things unfold this way but this type of matchup will get fans and players pumped up for Week 1.
After waiting nine months for a meaningful football game, opening the season at home will certainly be a treat.
