The San Francisco 49ers made sweeping offseason changes, revamping the roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They used their first five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft on defensive players after losing several key contributors in free agency. Despite drafting Mykel Williams in the first round and Alfred Collins in the second round, the 49ers still had a need for more depth on the defensive line. So, they decided to trade for Bryce Huff from the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.
The Huff trade certainly has its risks for San Francisco. While there is a chance that former Eagle can get back to his old form under his former head coach, Robert Saleh, that is far from a guarantee. However, it is still a worthy gamble for a player who has been very productive in his previous stop.
For the 49ers to really feel good about the trade, however, they need to continue adding to their defensive front. Despite the retooling there, the defensive line can still be considered one of the weaker positions for the 49ers. As their next move, the 49ers should further bolster the defensive line by signing a veteran defensive tackle.
49ers Must Sign a Veteran Defensive Tackle After Trading for Bryce Huff
As things stand now, the 49ers are projected to start rookie Collins and veteran Jordan Elliott on the interior. Fellow rookie CJ West and Kevin Givens will also see significant minutes there, while Evan Anderson and Kalia Davis are competing for a roster spot before the season. Despite the crowded room, there is a lack of proven difference makers.
At this point in the offseason, finding a proven difference maker in any position is difficult. However, the 49ers need to welcome more veteran competition in a position full of unproven, unestablished players.
San Francisco can still re-sign Khalil Davis as an option. Former Bills DT Austin Johnson and former Colts DT Taven Bryan are other veterans still available in free agency. The 49ers would be wise to bring one of them in for training camp to feel better about their defensive line depth for next season.
