The San Francisco 49ers are still hammering out a contract extension for starting quarterback Brock Purdy after paying star tight end George Kittle. However, it hasn’t stopped the 49ers from looking at another quarterback this offseason.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2 in Houston, the 49ers have invited former Wake Forest Demon Deacons quarterback Hank Bachmeier to rookie minicamp. This is a good opportunity for Bachmeier as 49ers’ seventh-round pick Kurtis Rourke is still recovering from offseason knee surgery after playing last season on a torn ACL.

It also allows San Francisco to see if Bachmeier could be a potential candidate to join them for training camp and compete for a practice squad spot. Tanner Mordecai is currently the 49ers’ No. 3 quarterback.

Bachmeier went undrafted following the 2025 NFL Draft after wrapping up a six-year collegiate career, which started at Boise State and ended at Wake Forest. Bachmeier played four years at Boise State, where he struggled with injury and inconsistent play under center.

From there, Bachmeier transferred to Louisiana Tech after the 2022 season. He completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 2,058 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions in nine games. The veteran quarterback was also hampered by a shoulder injury, forcing him to miss three games.

Last season with the Demon Deacons, Bachmeier bounced back in his sixth and last year of college football. The 6-foot-1 quarterback completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 2,593 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 12 games.

The last time Bachmeier played a full season was 2021, his best season at Boise State. The 6-foot-1 quarterback has the arm strength and velocity to hit those throws over the middle of the field and on in-breaking routes. Bachmeier isn’t the most mobile quarterback, but he can throw the ball well on the move.

Given that he’s already 26 years old, Bachmeier likely doesn’t have much pro upside. But with Rourke sidelined, this is his chance to prove that he could be a solid QB2 or QB3 in the NFL.
