The San Francisco 49ers are in the middle of week 2 of training camp. The last several practices have given the team time to start scooping out players who are fighting to make the roster.

This offseason, they paid Brock Purdy a hefty extension to keep him as their franchise QB for years to come and signed Mac Jones in free agency. Although QB1 and QB2 are locked down for the 49ers, there was a fierce battle for QB3, and it appears that there's a loser in that department.

The 49ers made several roster moves that featured several players getting signed and released. According to The Athletic's Matt Barrows, San Francisco released four players, including QB Tanner Mordecai. In the process, they signed Bradlee Anae, Isaiah Prince, Fabian Moreau, and Jaylen Mahoney.

49ers Released QB Tanner Mordecai

Mordecai signed with the 49ers in April 2024 as an undrafted free agent. He spent the campaign on the practice squad and signed a future contract with the team in January.

San Francisco didn't have the most faith in Mordecai, as they drafted Kurtis Rourke in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft. Rourke was placed on the active/non-football injury (NFI) list at the beginning of camp as he's been rehabbing since way back from a torn ACL.

Despite Rourke not even being on the football field, Mordecai didn't look like he was going to make the 53-man roster. This move makes it seem that the 49ers are content having just Purdy and Jones on the active roster while Rourke rehabs his way back.

Mordecai had the upper hand over Rourke due to being with the team for the last year while also being healthy. Despite those perks, he didn't take advantage and is on the open market to start the month of August.

Things are constantly changing in the NFL on a daily basis, so you never know if these paths will cross again. But as of now, the 49ers wanted to move on.

The timing is certainly tough for Mordecai, as the first preseason game against the Denver Broncos is on Aug. 9. That would have given a major opportunity to impress the staff in game action, but his play in practice didn't warrant that.

Instead, it looks like Jones and Carter Bradley will handle the QB game responsibilities this summer, and Mordecai looks to land on his feet elsewhere.
