The San Francisco 49ers have their sights set on the 2025 season. They made some changes to the coaching staff, which included firing Nick Sorensen and replacing him with Robert Saleh.
The changes continued on the staff, as San Francisco named Klint Kubiak their new offensive coordinator, getting elevated from offensive passing game specialist in 2024 and was the assistant quarterbacks coach the two seasons prior.
In the meantime, Brian Griese is no longer on the staff. Mick Lombardi replaced him as the quarterback's coach. Griese was with the 49ers for three seasons (2022-2024), but he decided to step away from coaching as a whole.
Per source, there was no ouster of Griese, who was well regarded by the team’s QBs. Griese didn‘t want to coach anymore. Earlier this year he declined an interview request for the Jets’ head coaching job. https://t.co/gdwBKHyY2q

49ers News: Brian Griese is No Longer in the NFL
During this past coaching cycle, Griese decided to decline a head coaching interview with the New York Jets.
In an article written by Matt Maiocco, he revealed that Griese was unsure about sticking around after the 2022 season but stuck around for two more years. This was Griese's first opportunity to coach at any level after playing in the NFL for 11 seasons.
He came into the league as a third-round pick in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. He had stops with the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Chicago Bears.
During Griese's tenure with the 49ers, he did an excellent job with Brock Purdy and his development. Over 40 games (36 starts), Purdy went 722-of-1069 (67.5%) for 9,518 passing yards and 64 passing touchdowns.
Kyle Shanahan's scheme is very quarterback-friendly, but Griese's work with Purdy went a long way as well. Despite the success that he had in San Francisco, it is clear the 49-year-old doesn't have a desire to stick in coaching.
He could have had a role on the 49ers staff for 2025 but wanted to head in a different direction.
