There are always cuts that a team wishes it didn't have to make. The San Francisco 49ers are going to be no different when that time comes. We know the team has to cut down to 53 men on the active roster by Tuesday, but it's likely not going to be a process that unfolds fast, nor will it be obvious who goes.

There are always surprises on every team. Guys cut who no one saw coming, or players who earned a spot that shocked the fandom. The 49ers are not going to be any different in that regard. They have a few players who could help the team this season, but may end up being cut. One of those names could end up being an asset for some other team, maybe even helping an NFC West rival.

For the 49ers, that player may end up being Chase Lucas. The cornerback out of Arizona State, and 2022 seventh-round draft pick, Lucas has had an exceptional preseason for the Niners. He's tackled well, covered well, and earned himself a PFF grade of 78.3 for his action in all three games. Yet, many, our own sister site included, seem to have Lucas being cut in favor of younger options.

Lucas has spent some time with the 49ers, and while he's played well enough since his arrival, it's hard to say that he's made such an impact on the defense that keeping him would be a no-brainer. Clearly, there's a lack of consistency and big-play capabilities that have kept him on the bubble for this long.

Still, he's a solid hand, and you know what he brings to the table. He may have a low ceiling, but he also appears to have a high floor. Meaning he may never be a Pro Bowler, but he may be good enough to be a team's fourth cornerback, or even a spot-starter in the case of injury.

Regardless of what his overall potential is at this point in his career, he's certainly someone who can provide depth and some backend help on a team, be it with the 49ers or elsewhere.
