The San Francisco 49ers made sweeping changes all over the roster this offseason as they look to bounce back in 2025.
One of the biggest departures for the 49ers was when they traded away wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Even though the WRs who will likely start are Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Pearsall, fourth-round rookie WR Jordan Watkins is someone to keep an eye out for, as he could be a hidden gem.
WR Jordan Watkins Is Already Standing Out for the 49ers
San Francisco added Watkins with the 138th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Aiyuk (knee) and Pearsall (hamstring) both missed organized team activities and minicamp, freeing up reps for Watkins to take advantage, which he accomplished without fail.
Quarterback Brock Purdy gave praise to his new WR, saying, "He's balling, man. Jordan Watkins has been balling from day one really. He's come in and he's done everything pretty right and he's been on point. He's had a lot of explosive plays down the field. Obviously, the short game, the intermediate, he's making plays all around. I'm excited for him."
Watkins was a three-year starter at Ole Miss, where he lined up inside and outside. He has shown the ability to be effective on all three levels of the field and is smooth catching the ball on the move. The Kentucky native has a quick release off the line of scrimmage and can also return punts if needed.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, Watkins posted a 4.37 40-yard dash, highlighting his game-breaking speed. Over 60 college games (42 starts), Watkins had 185 catches for 2,682 receiving yards, 18 touchdowns, and 14.5 yards per reception.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan added that Aiyuk likely won't be ready when the 49ers open training camp, when veterans report on July 22. That will continue to leave big-time reps available, leaving the door open for Watkins to further capitalize on the situation if he maintains his momentum.
Shanahan knows how to put his playmakers in positions to succeed, and Watkins is a player that 49ers fans should keep an eye out for this campaign. Especially if guys like Aiyuk and Pearsall continue to miss time.
