San Jose Sharks 2019-20 Season Grade and Analysis: RW Timo Meier
By Matt Hawkins
Timo Meier was one of the few bright spots for the San Jose Sharks in 2019-20.
Although the San Jose Sharks struggled throughout the 2019-20 season, 23-year-old right wing Timo Meier still put up solid numbers.
Meier played in all 70 of San Jose’s games and recorded 49 points (22 goals, 27 assists) with an average of 17:17 time-on-ice and 3.7 offensive point shares (OPS).
To put these stats into perspective, Meier’s 49 points lead the Sharks, while his 22 goals, 27 assists, and 3.7 OPS were second, third, and second on the team, respectively.
Furthermore, Meier had two powerplay and game-winning goals each — which were both tied for fifth on the Sharks. He also added seven powerplay assists, which was good for fourth on the team.
Even with playing on a team that struggled in the possession game, Meier’s possession metrics are excellent.
His Corsi for percentage (CF%) was 53.0% (+3.7 relative to his team) and his Fenwick for percentage (FF%) was 53.1% (+4.3 relative to his team). Respectively, these ranked fifth and third on the team when comparing them to Sharks that played at least 20 games.

Meier also played in almost every situation for the Sharks this season. He had an even-strength average time-on-ice (ATOI) of 14:28, powerplay ATOI of 2:06, and penalty kill ATOI of 0:41.
Respectively, these ranked eighth among skaters and second among forwards, seventh among skaters and fifth among forwards, and 16th among skaters and ninth among forwards. His overall ATOI of 17:17 ranked eighth among skaters and fourth among forwards.
While he was good offensively, like the San Jose Sharks as a whole, Meier struggled defensively. He finished the season with a plus/minus of -22 and a defensive point shares (DPS) of 0.9.
One positive thing about Meier’s defensive game this season was it was more physical than previous seasons, with 155 hits.
Like I did with his offensive stats and ice-time, I’ll compare Meier’s defensive stats to the rest of his teammates. Meier’s minus-22 plus/minus ranked 23rd among Sharks that played at least 20 games, while his 0.9 DPS and 155 hits ranked 11th and second, respectively.
San Jose Sharks Grade:
Although Meier didn’t meet the expectations of last season’s 30 goals and 66 points, he still had a very solid year where he was on pace for 58 points with a full, 82-game season.
As you saw with how his stats compared to the rest of his Sharks’ teammates, he was one of the best, if not the best forward as well as overall skater on the team.
However, Meier wasn’t the best defensively — even with the added physicality to his game, so this decreases his grade a bit.
I think a B+ is a fair grade for Meier.
