In Las Vegas Raiders news, one NFL executive apparently thinks that the team could make a run at Aaron Rodgers in the 2021 offseason.

The Las Vegas Raiders news has continued post-2020 NFL Draft, although this piece of news might be something to take with a grain of salt.

Per a recent report from Mike Sando of The Athletic, there is at least one NFL executive out there who sees the Raiders targeting Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers next offseason.

Sando iterated that the executive listed Las Vegas as a “prime destination” for Rodgers given the state of their roster and the bright lights of the city.

Now, it should be stated that the opinion of one executive hardly qualifies as a viable rumor. The 2020 season is yet to be played and there are far too many events that could unfold from now until then.

But just for the sake of it, what would it take to bring Aaron Rodgers to Vegas? In what possible scenario could Rodgers be wearing a Raiders jersey in 2021?

For starters, it would mean that the Derek Carr era would officially be put to an end. Carr has seen rumors about his job status run wild over the past few years, yet the six-year veteran still holds the starting spot as we speak.

Sure the signing of Marcus Mariota is intended to put some pressure on the 29-year-old. But Carr is the starter until further notice, and it will take him failing for Mariota to be given a shot.

So in this hypothetical scenario, Carr fails to prove that he’s the right quarterback for the job despite an improved supporting cast. Perhaps they give Mariota a shot late in the season if it’s that bad.

Either way, neither solidifies themselves as the quarterback of the present, let alone the future, and the Raiders decide it’s best to move on.

Much like this offseason with rumors running rampant about the team’s interest in Tom Brady, the same would likely ensue with Rodgers. Only this time, those rumors would be twofold.

But just interest from the Raiders side wouldn’t be enough to move the needle. Clearly the Packers would need a reason to move on from Rodgers.

The reason for that starts and ends with Jordan Love.

The Packers traded up in the first round to select the raw, but gifted Utah State quarterback and many are pegging him as the future in Green Bay. But might that future come as soon as 2021?

It would take a declining Rodgers or disappointing Packers season in 2020 for them to even consider it, but it’s possible. Maybe injuries finally catch up with Rodgers. Or maybe Green Bay is simply outmatched in an ultra-competitive NFC.

Anything is possible. And for Rodgers to join the Raiders in 2021, that’s just what has to happen.

Then a trade would need to be facilitated.

The Packers are locked into his contract through 2021 and even after that, there would be a sizable dead cap hit of $17.2 million if he were to be cut. That simply isn’t plausible.

Now, we’re not going to speculate on what the trade would have to entail as there are just too many variables at play right now to determine what Rodgers value would be after the season.

Ultimately, Aaron Rodgers to the Raiders seems like a massive longshot. Anything is possible, but it might just be wise to file this piece of Las Vegas Raiders news in the “highly unlikely” folder until further notice.
