Now that Cam Newton has been released, we take a look at the good, bad, and ugly reasons why the Raiders should sign the former Carolina Panthers quarterback.

The Las Vegas Raiders seem content to move forward with their current quarterback duo of Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota.

The team was once expected to pursue Tom Brady and other big-name players. However, now that the dust has settled, the franchise has elected to make only the modest investment of a Mariota signing.

While there is a chance that the team could invest the 12th or 19th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on a new franchise quarterback, it appears as though Carr will be the starter with Mariota providing some competition and depth.

Whether this is the right decision will be determined by the Raiders’ position in the final standings.

The team’s lack of a major move does beg one important question — have they done enough to address the quarterback position?

When their options were limited to signing the turnover-prone Jameis Winston, or trading for middle-tier talents like Andy Dalton or Mitchell Trubisky, it made sense to stick with Carr.

However, another fascinating option just became available — former NFL MVP Cam Newton.

ESPN is reporting that the Panthers are expected to cut their former franchise player after failing to find a trade partner. This means his services are available to whichever team can assemble the most interesting package of money and opportunity.

Here’s why Jon Gruden and the Raiders should seriously consider signing the former Panthers’ star.
