What happens to Jimmy Garoppolo?

Rumors about a possible union between future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and the 49ers have been swirling for weeks. While some of this discussion has been fueled by a need to create content, where there is smoke there is generally fire.

Several credible sources have also reported that this “buzz is real.”

While I have my doubts that the team would actually replace Jimmy Garoppolo (a player who just led the team within a few minutes of a Super Bowl championship) with the aging superstar, the fact that the notion is even considered shines some light on how the team views their incumbent starter.

Shanahan has made a career out of getting the best out of the quarterback position. He took Atlanta Falcons star Matt Ryan from a fringe Pro Bowler to the MVP of the league.

He has also worked magic with Garoppolo. There is no reason to think that he couldn’t find success with many signal-callers.

So why move forward with a player who recently signed a massive five-year, $137.5 million contract? If Shanahan’s greatest skill is maximizing his quarterback play, why not do so with a player that takes up much less cap space?

Prediction

The 49ers will pass on Tom Brady.

However, in a shocking and bold move, they will also elect to move forward without Garoppolo. After Brady signs elsewhere, the 49ers will trade Garoppolo to back to his original team in New England for as much draft capital as they can get.

Brady, Garoppolo, and the 49ers all use the offseason to hit the reset button and get a fresh start.
