Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is set to be a hot topic this offseason and teams will reportedly inquire about him during the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

There will be no bigger headline surrounding the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason than the one regarding quarterback Derek Carr. Carr’s name has been circling the rumor mill for months now and it’s currently unclear what the Raiders’ plans are for him.

The 28-year-old will be in the third year of a five-year, $125 million extension in 2020 but it will also mark the first season in which the dead cap associated with releasing him will be less than his projected cap hit.

That’s significant as it offers the Raiders their first true opportunity to move on if so desired. Of course, whether they should or not remains an entirely different discussion.

Carr is coming off a pretty solid 2019 campaign in which he threw for over 4,000 yards again and topped a 70 percent completion percentage for the first time in his career. While his touchdown total of 21 wasn’t anything special, his eight interception mark was his lowest since 2016.

Carr wasn’t a superstar in 2019, but he was effective. But the overbearing question remains whether he is good enough to win the big one and lead his team to Super Bowl glory.

Whether it’s the Raiders who decide to retain Carr for another season or if another team swoops in and acquires him, he’s sure to generate plenty of interest this offseason.

Reports are indicating that teams will be inquiring about Carr’s availability and touching base with the Raiders on a possible trade as early as this week’s 2020 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The Combine is typically the first event of the offseason where opposing teams could meet up and discuss possible trades. Expect Carr’s name to be floated around quite a bit in Indianapolis.

If the Raiders were to move on from Carr, it’s highly probable that it would come in a trade as opposed to the team simply cutting him. Perhaps the team would fall in love with one of the quarterbacks in this year’s draft and decide to make the change.

Or perhaps the rumors of Tom Brady departing New England for Las Vegas are actually true.

Regardless, don’t expect the rumor mill to quiet down until the offseason is finally over and  Derek Carr — or someone else — takes the field for the Raiders in Week 1.
