San Francisco Giants’ president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has made it clear that’s he not out to win the fans over this offseason.

San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has found himself under heavy criticism to start the offseason. After multiple unpopular decisions, it’s clear that he doesn’t exactly have the full support of the fanbase behind him.

But at the same time, it’s evident that that’s not what he’s seeking.

The Giants entered the offseason with hopes of a brighter future after years of lackluster play following their World Series runs earlier in the decade. A new era was set to be ushered in.

Gone was Bruce Bochy and it would be up to Zaidi — who had just completed his first year with the organization — to select a new manager and hire a general manager to lead the franchise into this new era.

And his vision for the future hasn’t exactly coincided with what any Giants fans envisioned. This is no more evident than the man he chose to be Bochy’s replacement.

Former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler was brought in to be the team’s new skipper and, in many ways, he represents the antithesis to his predecessor.

Bochy was a beloved, old-school, players’ manager who the fanbase adored almost as much as his players did. He was one of the last managers not to fully embrace the world of analytics and while he may have been a bit behind on the times, he always had the players and fans’ full support.

Kapler is pretty much the opposite.

The former MLB outfielder is a by-the-books, analytical mind who hasn’t exactly garnered a reputation as a friendly personality. He can be a bit bland and unapproachable, but he’s considered part of the new-age of MLB managers.

For a variety of reasons, Kapler was likely the last choice that fans had in mind. From his failed tenure in Philadelphia to controversial mishandling of sexual assault allegations during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kapler wasn’t a popular option.

But he was Zaidi’s guy and the man who he felt was best fit for the job. He ignored fans’ pleas and stuck by his plan.

And since the day Kapler was announced as the Giants’ new manager, Zaidi hasn’t done himself any more favors with the fanbase.

His decision to let the ever-popular Kevin Pillar walk in free agency resulted in more cries from a displeased fanbase even if, from a baseball perspective, his reasoning was sound.

Not to mention his handling of the Madison Bumgarner situation. The Giants legend reportedly wants to return to San Francisco but Zaidi and the Giants have shown no interest in bringing him back.

Now, it appears as though he’s destined to play elsewhere in 2020 and beyond.

Zaidi is making the moves that he believes are best for the team going forward. And despite the mass outcry and daily criticisms from the fanbase, Zaidi has maintained his composure and stuck to his guns.

And for that, you have to give him credit.

Zaidi isn’t winning fans over at the moment, but there’s a very simple fix to displeasure regarding unpopular decisions.

Winning.

If Zaidi’s plan works and his moves begin to pay off, Giants fans will be quick to forget about his decision to let Pillar walk or hire Kapler. If the Giants are winning, nothing else matters.

Of course, that winning is unlikely to happen this year. Zaidi knows this and the fans surely know it too. But seeing progress is important and if the Giants could prove that the man in charge is leading them in the right direction, then all will be forgotten.

Zaidi isn’t making any friends right now, but he doesn’t have to. All he has to focus on is running a baseball organization.
