Clelin Ferrell did get a deflection in the third quarter which led to a punt as the rookie showed the one positive he has shown throughout eight weeks which is his awareness and football IQ. He sat in coverage as a QB spy on Watson and timed his jump perfectly to bat it down.
Ferrell was billed as an NFL-ready run defender, but in this one there were a couple of plays where he either bit on the play-action or could not hold the edge on runs that went right to him — not something we have seen happen to him often despite his early struggles.
Through Week 8, Ferrell is ranked seventh of the seven eligible rookie pass rushers when it comes to pass-rush win rate, with a minuscule rate of winning at only 6.7 percent per Pro Football Focus, sitting behind Washington Redskins’ rookie Montez Sweat at 7.6% percent.
Ferrell will need to raise his level of play big time if he is to justify his draft position, as he is starting to look like the only disappointing pick of the Raiders entire 2019 class.
