San Francisco 49ers: Complete grades for Week 2 victory over Cincinnati Bengals

After a disappointing Week 1 for Kyle Shanahan’s offense, the young head coach’s unit came back and dominated in Week 1 — and in no small part due to the offensive playcalling.

The 49ers stuck with the ground game when it was working — which was pretty much the entirety of the game — and opened up Garoppolo and the passing game.
Most notably, the 49ers were a very solid 5-for-9 on third-down attempts while they also converted three of their five red-zone trips into touchdowns. That’s a step up from their measly 41% success rate from a year ago.
And on defense, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s unit is looking significantly improved in his third season with the team.
Much of that likely has to do with an improved selection of talent, but it’s still great to see a player like Ahkello Witherspoon living up to his potential in his third season in Saleh’s system.
You’d obviously like to see them cut down on the penalties as the 49ers finished with nine penalties for 75 yards. Still, it’s hard to complain about the coaching staff after a performance like this.
