3. Special Teams

If there was a dull unit in this game it was the special teams unit. While the offense exploded for nearly 600 total yards and the defense dominated once again, the 49ers special teams had a pretty quiet afternoon following an eventful outing in Week 1.

Perhaps the most exciting play came on a second-quarter punt from rookie fourth-round pick Mitch Wishnowsky. The first-year punter out of Utah downed the Bengals inside the five-yard line with a beautiful sky-high boot.

It was second-year defensive back D.J. Reed who managed to make his way downfield and down the ball on a rare possession that stalled for the 49ers.

However, one of the lone lowlights of the afternoon came when usually reliable kicker Robbie Gould lined up for a 39-yard field goal attempt with around seven minutes left to play. Gould would push it wide for what was a very rare miss.

In fact, Gould had missed just three kicks since the 2016 season with only one of them coming from under 40 yards out. For that reason — and that reason alone — the special teams grade takes a hit.

However, his make form 33-yards out earlier in the game prevents it from being any worse.

Final Grade: B-
