San Francisco 49ers: Top 4 takeaways from the initial depth chart release
By Justin Fried
1. Surprising starter listed at running back
Aside from having one of the deepest defensive lines in the NFL, the 49ers also play host to one of the most talented backfield in the entire league. For that reason, labeling one player as a ‘starter’ is a moot point as a committee approach will undoubtedly be taken.
That said, it was still mildly surprising to see 2018 breakout star Matt Breida listed at the top of the running back depth chart.

Breida entered the league as an undrafted rookie back in 2017 but truly broke out when given the chance to start last season. In 14 games, the Georgia Southern product accumulated over 1,000 total scrimmage yards and averaged a stellar 5.3 yards per carry.
But with the addition of former Atlanta Falcons tailback Tevin Coleman in the offseason, Breida was expected to take a step back while Coleman emerged as the primary back.
That isn’t to say that Breida was going to see a major drop in usage, but Coleman and head coach Kyle Shanahan have a history dating back to their time together in Atlanta. And Coleman’s skill set perfectly fits the 49ers offense making him the obvious choice for top-back snaps.
Still, Breida impressed a ton last season so it shouldn’t be too surprising to see the 49ers opt to go with the returning player over the incoming free agent signing. Expect the two to split snaps almost 50/50 with their usage depending on the ultimate flow of the game.
Coleman may still end up receiving a little more work, but Breida appears to be the top guy going into Week 1.
