San Francisco 49ers: Top 3 most surprising developments from roster cuts

3. The wide receiver depth chart is still crowded
After injuries decimated the 49ers receiving corps last season, the team entered 2019 with a ton of promise at the position. And with promise comes competition.
San Francisco drafted a pair of receivers in the second round in Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd who were, of course, locks to make the roster. The same could be said for both Marquise Goodwin and Dante Pettis whose roster statuses were never in doubt.
But for the remainder of the receivers in camp this summer, they were going to have to fight their way on to the roster.
There were expectedly going to be some tough cuts with a crowded wide receiver room. However, after initial cuts, the receiver depth chart still looks just about as crowded as it did before.
The 49ers decided to retain a whopping seven wide receivers to begin the season — and that is to go along with the four tight ends currently on the roster. The only notable cut was to veteran Jordan Matthews who simply fell victim to the numbers game.
Aside from the aforementioned locks, the likes of Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, and Richie James each earned roster spots for various reasons.
Perhaps this is only temporary given the injuries to both Taylor and Hurd that could keep them out for Week 1. Regardless, the roster cuts were expected to clarify the team’s wide receiver depth chart a little.
But as it stands now, it appears just about as crowded as it was prior to cuts.
