The San Francisco 49ers have officially cut down their roster from 90 players to the final 53. Here are the three most surprising developments from final roster cuts.

The San Francisco 49ers have officially made their way through the 2019 roster cut day. Their roster is looking slimmer with just 53 players under contract at the moment — down from the 90 that inhabited it just a day ago.

There were some tough cuts to be made this preseason with the 49ers being deep at a number of positions. And with an influx of new talent, the competition for roster spots was steeper than it had been in years.

Of course, the current incarnation of the 53-man roster won’t remain intact all year. In fact, it’s unlikely that these specific 53 players are on the team in a day or two from now.

With the 49ers having the second waiver claim, expect the team to be very active on the waiver wire as they attempt to turn another team’s trash into their own homemade treasure.

Still, the initial 53-man roster should give fans a good idea of which players could be around for the long-haul. Conversely, it also shows which players were expendable and not a part of the team’s future plans.

With that, let’s take a look at the top three most surprising developments from the 49ers initial roster cuts. Honorable mentions go to Jerick McKinnon ending up on the season-ending injured reserve and the team deciding to carry three quarterbacks.
