Three weeks into the preseason the San Francisco 49ers are undefeated, but the wins don’t count for much now. After finishing just 4-12 last season, what are the biggest reasons to believe they can turn into the NFC West champions?

Almost every NFL season a team coming off a horrid season turns it around to win their division. Generally, that conversation focuses on teams that finished in last place.

The San Francisco 49ers managed to pull off the unique feet of finishing with the second-worst record in the league, while also holding the second-worst record in their division.

In reality, the 49ers should be looked at as a last-place team. They finished the 2018 season with a 4-12 record and questions surrounding a large part of their roster remain.

Entering Kyle Shanahan‘s third season as head coach, the pressure is mounting to have sustained success. Granted, the context around the team gives room for hope.

For one, the team played most of last season without their franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. They have a host of key players returning from injury and added more top talent through free agency and the draft.

To win the NFC West a lot of things will have to go right. Here are the four biggest reasons.
