Stock Down: Doug Martin, RB

Doug Martin had two carries for one yard versus the Cardinals Thursday night.

You can’t really say a running back had a bad performance with only two carries, but Martin is on this list more so because of what the other younger backs have done this and last week rather than because of what Martin has or hasn’t done.

Jacobs mentioned above, of course, had a good performance, as did DeAndre Washington for the second week in a row. James Butler stepped it up a bit after last week’s disappointing performance, and Mack Brown showed up as well gaining 27 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Martin is 30-years-old which is the dreaded age for running backs not named Frank Gore. And with the likes of Josh Jacobs and Jalen Richard being locks, while Washington shows why he should be, I don’t see why the coaching staff would use a roster spot on Martin.

Unless they don’t believe Washington can continue his positive performances into the regular season.

We know what Martin is and he was pretty good last year, but he’s a year older out of his prime, while the other backs are heading into their primes.

With deep positions like receiver and defensive tackle, I don’t see Martin making the final cut despite his veteran presence and relationship with head coach Jon Gruden.
