The Favorite: Minnesota Timberwolves
Centerpiece: Robert Covington

Before the Warriors swooped in, the Timberwolves looked like a favorite to sign Russell. The organization has committed to Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins as their core pieces but had long desired a point guard and third piece that could bring it all together.

Russell would make an amazing fit with Towns and would be an upgrade over current point guard Jeff Teague. Furthermore, after next season Teague and current backup point guard Shabazz Napier are both set to hit free agency.

The Timberwolves make sense from the Warriors perspective as well. They have invested heavily at wing — the Warriors biggest need.

More from Golden State Warriors

Robert Covington may not be a big name, but he’s a fantastic NBA player who just won’t be appreciated unless he sees deep postseason action. Covington is one of the best three-and-D players in the league.

He ranks among the league’s best in almost all defensive metrics while shooting 36% from three over his career. Covington would fit perfectly on the Warriors roster providing a perimeter wing stopper in the mold of Andre Igoudala.

Covington will have two years remaining on his contract at about $12.5 million a season — requiring the Wolves to add another salary or two to make the deal work.

Depending on how next season plays out, if the Timberwolves remain invested in Wiggins, recent top selection Jarrett Culver could both provide necessary salary and offer the Warriors another young and projectable prospect.

If not, Gorgui Dieng is set to have a $17 million expiring contract, which could be paired with Covington and picks to make for an unexciting, but satisfying package for Russell.
