San Francisco 49ers: Top 5 early takeaways from training camp

1. Jimmy Garoppolo is expectedly rusty
While most of the news coming out of 49ers training camp has been generally pretty positive, the news surrounding quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hasn’t exactly been encouraging.
But at the same time, it’s nothing that shouldn’t have been expected.

After not playing football for nearly a full year, Garoppolo has been expectedly sloppy so far in training camp. He’s routinely missed throws he normally makes and has all-around struggled to get into a groove on offense.
However, it’s looking like he’s been coming around as of late.
After a rough first two days of practice, Garoppolo went 8-of-14 on Day 3 including a 60-yard bomb to the speedy Richie James. The 27-year-old also showed off his legs scrambling for a 15-yard first down — a moment where those in attendance likely held their collective breaths.
It hasn’t been all bad for Garoppolo but he doesn’t quite look like himself just yet. And that’s just fine.
It’s perfectly reasonable for Garoppolo to look rusty after being off the field for so long. On top of that, he’s working with a good amount of new offensive weapons so it will take time to develop the necessary chemistry.
Not an ideal start from Garoppolo, but also not a cause for concern just yet.
