4. The wide receiver competition is heating up

Everyone knew that the position battle at wide receiver was going to be one of the more interesting competitions this summer and it appears that the players have gotten that memo as well.

Through six practices, we’ve seen pretty much every receiver fighting for playing time shine in their own way.

Marquise Goodwin looks like his old self burning past defenders. Despite some early drops, Dante Pettis has flashed his immense potential. Rookie Jalen Hurd has shown off his ferocious blocking downfield.

And let’s not forget about players such as Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, and Richie James who have each impressed enough to qualify for a roster spot. Even veteran Jordan Matthews shined early last week establishing a connection with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The only receiver who really hasn’t done much has been rookie Deebo Samuel but he should be considered a lock to make the roster regardless.

With Goodwin, Pettis, Hurd, and Samuel all locks for a roster spot, that likely leaves two open spots for the others to compete for. And with the way that training camp has gone so far, the 49ers will have to make some very difficult cuts come September.
