San Francisco 49ers: Top 5 early takeaways from training camp
By Justin Fried
The San Francisco 49ers’ training camp is underway and with six practices officially in the books, let’s take a look at five early takeaways from the summer so far.
The San Francisco 49ers are just over a month away from the start of the 2019 regular season and anticipation is beginning to build.
Training camp is well underway and it’s time to start focusing on position battles as the roster begins to take shape. There is an abundance of questions to be answered this summer as the team looks to improve upon a disastrous 4-12 record last season.
And with the collection of new and returning talent, achieving such heights shouldn’t be too hard to attain.
In fact, the 49ers have playoff hopes in mind and feel that they have the roster to get it done. We’ll have to wait and see how the team performs once the regular season comes around, but we could at least look at a few notes from training camp so far.
With that, here is a list of five early takeaways from the first six days of 49ers training camp practices.
5. Nick Bosa looks like the real deal
To be fair, this entry should be about the entire 49ers defensive line which has absolutely dominated so far, but we’re going to specifically focus on the team’s highly-praised first-round pick.
Nick Bosa has lived up to the hype thus far in training camp getting the better of longtime stalwart left tackle Joe Staley on a number of occasions. And when matched up against second-year right tackle Mike McGlinchey, the results have been the same.
Bosa started camp working with the second unit — a common theme for rookies — but it didn’t even take until the end of the first practice for the coaching staff to move him up a unit.
He’s been that good.
If Bosa could stay healthy, he should be the odds-on favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year and follow in the footsteps of his brother who won the same award just three years ago. And if analysts are correct, Nick has every chance to be better than his elder brother.
With early praise from Staley and the coaching staff, Bosa could be in-line for a huge rookie season in 2019. No one should be questioning his ability, but his health should still be something to monitor going forward.
