San Francisco Giants: Breaking down the new prospects acquired at the deadline
By Justin Fried
Joe McCarthy, OF/1B
Drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round back in 2015, Joe McCarthy is a 25-year-old corner outfielder/first baseman who has also seen injuries hinder his recent production.
The Giants sent the Rays 21-year-old lefty Jacob Lopez making this a straight-up exchange of prospects. McCarthy has had a down year in terms of production slashing just .192/.319/.372 in 43 games but a lot of that has been due to a lingering back issue.
The left-handed bat doesn’t hit for much power but has a good eye at the plate as evidenced by his high walk rate and low strikeout rate.
There isn’t too much to get excited about here but hopefully, McCarthy could return to full health and turn his career around.
Prelander Berroa, RHP

Prelander Berroa was one of a trio of prospects acquired in the Sam Dyson deal and the hard-throwing right-hander ranked 28th in the Minnesota Twins farm system at the time of the trade.
Berroa has a live fastball which touches the upper-90’s but has really struggled with his command walking 16 batters in 31.2 innings pitched down in the rookie league this year. In seven starts, he has a 4.55 ERA which is significantly higher than his 2.29 ERA last season.
His breaking pitches need work but both his changeup and curveball have been projected as potential “out” pitches by analysts.
Berroa should be a number of years away from the majors but he’s a name to keep an eye on even if he doesn’t crack the Giants top-30 prospect list.
