San Francisco 49ers: Which players did Madden overrate and underrate?
By Justin Fried
Overrated: WR Marquise Goodwin
To be fair, Marquise Goodwin‘s 83 overall rating isn’t anything egregious by itself. But comparing it to his peers, it does appear to be a slight overrate.
In terms of the NFL, Goodwin is tied for the 30th-best overall rating among all wide receivers which actually places him as a low-tier No. 1/high-level No. 2 wideout. Some might agree with that statement, and it’s not entirely an outrageous claim.
But the numbers don’t exactly support that kind of claim.
Other players listed as an 83 overall include the likes of Kenny Golladay and Tyler Boyd — two players coming off of 1,000-yard campaigns in less-than-stellar offenses. Josh Gordon and Tyrell Williams are also listed at the same overall and it’s safe to say that each is a more complete receiver than Goodwin.
Not to mention, you could make the argument that Goodwin isn’t even the top receiver on the 49ers roster. Second-year pro Dante Pettis is rated as an 80 overall which seems reasonable for the time being, but it’s highly questionable to see Goodwin be three overall points higher.
This is likely an instance of certain attribute points holding more weight as Goodwin’s 96 speed is topped by only Tyreek Hill, Marquise Brown, and John Ross.
Again, this isn’t some egregious mistake, but it is a case of a player being overrated — if only slightly.
