Golden State Warriors: Top 3 standouts from the 2019 summer league
By Justin Fried
The Golden State Warriors have concluded their 2019 summer league stint and although they finished at just 3-5, they still have a few players who stood out.
The Golden State Warriors have finished up their 2019 summer league and although they started off poorly, their performance in Las Vegas was a major improvement.
The team finished their California Classic trip with an 0-3 record, but followed that up with an improved 3-2 showing in Vegas following three straight victories. All the while they saw some serious development and signs of promise from their young players.
And with three 2019 draft picks playing in the summer this year, all eyes were on the Warriors selections to see how they would fare in their first glimpse of “NBA” action.
Now that the dust has settled, it’s safe to say that they did pretty well.
With that, let’s take a look at three players who stood out the most for the Warriors in this year’s summer league. Please note that we will be counting both summer league and California Classic performances for these rankings.
3. Eric Paschall
Second-round pick Eric Paschall, unfortunately, missed pretty much all of the Las Vegas action, but his performance in Sacramento showed enough promise to land him on this list.
Paschall showed his impressive defensive pedigree all throughout the first four games of the summer but it was his performances in the Warriors second and fourth games that really stood out.
The Villanova product paced the team in points in Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers going a smooth 6-of-8 from the floor including a perfect 2-of-2 from behind the arc, finishing with 18 points. Paschall would then post 12 more points and five rebounds in the fourth game before leaving with an injury.
That injury would ultimately keep Paschall out for the remainder of the summer but it’s clear what the Warriors expect from the young rookie. Despite being the last of three Warriors draft picks, Paschall should be expected to play some serious rotational minutes early on.
His high basketball IQ, solid defense, and well-rounded offensive game make him a prime candidate to backup Draymond Green at power forward to begin the season.
We considered placing Mexican star Juan Toscano-Anderson in this spot because he played more of a complete summer, but ultimately Paschall looked more NBA-ready and appears to have a brighter NBA future.
An injury may have robbed him of an opportunity to play more, but Paschall still managed to live up to the initial hype.
