Golden State Warriors: 3 depth options still available in free agency
By Justin Fried
The Golden State Warriors have filled out most of their roster but can still use some added depth. Here are three free agents still on the market that could help them next season.
The Golden State Warriors have seen firsthand over their recent history how important adequate depth is. During their championship runs of prior years, their bench depth is what carried them to the promised land.
But this past season, their depth was put to the ultimate test following multiple significant injuries. And unfortunately, their bench ultimately failed them.
Once again, the Warriors are in a major cap bind this offseason and after acquiring all-star guard D’Angelo Russell from the Brooklyn Nets, the team has very little they could do with their remaining cap. However, they still could use some added depth at the bottom of their roster.
With 14 players currently under contract, Golden State would have room for one more player on a minimum deal to be signed. On top of that, the team could always opt to waive a player or trade away some salary — Damian Jones being the most likely trade candidate — to free up a roster spot.
Either way, there’s certainly room for another addition to the roster and these three players could be just the right depth pieces that the team is looking for.
3. Corey Brewer
While the addition of Russell helped sure up the backcourt in Klay Thompson‘s absence and the signing of Willie Cauley-Stein helped give the team some adequate center depth, the Warriors still don’t have much of anything on the wing.
Third-year pro Alfonzo McKinnie and the newly signed Glenn Robinson III are the only viable small forwards on the roster and even Robinson is more of a true shooting guard. The departure of Andre Iguodala has left the team with a gaping hole at the position and in desperate need of depth.
Enter veteran Corey Brewer.
Brewer spent the second half of last season playing with the Warriors’ NorCal rivals, the Sacramento Kings. The 12-year veteran is a scrappy defender and well-liked locker room leader with postseason experience.
While his best days are surely behind him, Brewer would give the team some much-needed depth at small forward while serving as a mentor to the younger McKinnie and Robinson.
Brewer served as an essential spark plug for the Kings in the few games he did play last season and he could hopefully fill that same role in Golden State.
With the Warriors desperately in need of some wing depth and overall defensive depth coming off the bench, Brewer makes a ton of sense for the team.
