1. Joe Thornton

And that brings us to the only notable unrestricted free agent likely to re-sign with the Sharks — that being longtime center Joe Thornton.

More from Golden Gate Sports

Thornton has been with the Sharks since the 2005-2006 season and after some initial concerns that he would finally hang up his skates, it looks like he’s ready to return for what will be his 22nd NHL season.

And if we’re taking his word for it, it’s nearly a lock to be with the Sharks.

While San Jose can’t offer much in terms of financial compensation, it’s likely that Thornton will take a huge hometown discount to remain a part of the organization that has treated him well for so many years.

Wilson didn’t seem too concerned about Thornton going anywhere when he was asked earlier in the offseason about his possible return. He was quoted saying the following.

"“There will always be a place for Joe Thornton in this organization, on or off the ice.”"

At this point, it’s pretty much a lock that if Thornton plays another season, it will be with the Sharks. And it seems that all signs point to him lacing up his skates once again and taking the ice for yet another season.

The Sharks might lose one long-tenured “Joe” in free agency, but don’t count on them both.

Odds of re-signing: Highly Likely (greater than 90%)
