3. Find a suitable backup point guard

Outside of the two glaring needs at small forward and center, the Kings also happen to have a hole to fill with their backup point guard position.

De’Aaron Fox was a revelation in his sophomore NBA season improving upon basically all of his numbers and establishing himself as one of the best young point guards in the league. But when he came off the floor, Sacramento struggled to replicate his production.

More from Golden Gate Sports

The Kings switched between the likes of Frank Mason and Yogi Ferrell to run the second unit but their struggles were evident as Sacramento went from the 17th best offensive rating to the 28th best when Fox wasn’t on the floor.

With both unlikely to return for next season, free agency will be where the team could truly upgrade at the position.

Some veteran names to watch include Ish Smith, Trey Burke, Shelvin Mack, and Emmanuel Mudiay. On the higher-end, the Kings could even look at veterans like Darren Collison or Cory Joseph.

Another intriguing option could be to bring Isaiah Thomas back to Northern California.

Thomas has seemingly fallen off the map and spent last season rehabbing injuries and riding the Denver Nuggets bench. Perhaps a return to where his NBA career began could be just what the doctor ordered.

Regardless, the Kings need a reliable backup to play some minutes when Fox comes off the court. Fortunately, they should be able to find just that this offseason.

Now it’s all a matter of finding the right one for the right price.
