Stephon Herron Jr., EDGE — Louisville, KY

Stanford’s top defensive recruit in this years class, four-star defensive end Stephen Herron chose the Cardinal after de-committing from Michigan following news that he was academically accepted to Stanford.

Ironic how the man who made Stanford a powerhouse in the first place (Jim Harbaugh) is now getting recruits stolen from him by his heir apparent in coach David Shaw.

Herron stands at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and played for Trinity High School in Kentucky whom he won a state championship with in 2017. Herron had 13 tackles for a loss, and six sacks his senior year, on top of 42 tackles.

Steve Wiltfong of 247sports compares Herron to Dee Ford and had the following to say about him.

"“One of the more athletically gifted edge rushers in the country including a laser-timed 4.7 40-yard dash and 4.1 shuttle at a Nike Football The Opening Regional. Those traits translated to the field on Fridays where Herron racked up 47 sacks as a four-year varsity starter for the Kentucky powerhouse. Herron has the initial quickness and flexibility coveted at the position, an explosive player that will add strength on the next level. “"

Herron’s junior highlights make him look like more of a power rusher, as he mostly bull-rushed and bullied his way to the quarterback, but the number one knock you hear about him is that he is undersized as a defensive end and sort of a tweener.

Luckily, Stanford runs a 3-4 defense and Herron is going to be playing as a 3-4 outside linebacker which is the position that suits him.
