3. RP Mark Melancon

After two consecutive hitters, we’re officially on to the Giants bullpen that has been so impressive in 2019. And we’re starting with perhaps the most surprising bullpen arm of all given his stellar play this year, Mark Melancon.

Melancon had a rough first two seasons in San Francisco and was finally removed from the closer role for the last time in 2018 after struggling to start the season. Expected to play a minimal role in the 2019 bullpen, Melancon has slowly worked his way back in favor of Bochy and the Giants.

More from San Francisco Giants

The 12-year veteran has pitched his way to an excellent 2.31 ERA this year through 22 games thus far. That ERA currently ranks as the best out of every member of the Giants pitching staff, starter or reliever.

While it’s unlikely he makes the All-Star Game as a straight-up reliever, he could see some save opportunities before long if the team opts to move closer Will Smith before the deadline — more on him later.

The sooner the Giants deal Smith, the better chance Melancon would have of earning an All-Star bid. If not Melancon, the likes of Sam Dyson, Tony Watson, or Reyes Moronta could also be in line for increased ninth-inning duties.
