After a home-run pick in the first round, the 49ers were able to snag another high-upside player at a position of need in safety Nasir Adderley.

Adderley is expected to be a fringe first-round prospect so it was impossible to pass up on him once he fell to pick No. 36. The Delaware product is exactly the type of player the 49ers are looking for at the safety position.

Apart from Alabama’s Deionte Thompson, Adderley might be the rangiest defensive back in the entire class. He has shown the versatility to play both safety positions and even has experience playing both outside and slot corner.

However, Adderley primarily played as a single-high safety during his senior season at Delaware, a role the 49ers are desperate to fill. The 21-year-old has the speed and athleticism to cover sideline-to-sideline and he really excels when asked to play zone coverage.

The 49ers return Adrian Colbert who is currently slotted as the team’s starting free safety but he is best served in a reserve role. Adderley would give the team a Week 1 starter at safety and a true single-high safety to play in defensive coordinator Robert Saleh‘s Cover 3-heavy scheme.

And at pick No. 36, this would be quite the steal.
