The San Jose Sharks playoffs will kick off Wednesday night as the team takes on the Vegas Golden Knights in their first game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After plenty of anticipation, the San Jose Sharks are set to kick off their first-round playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night. This series is a rematch of the second round of last season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs where the Golden Knights came out on top in six games.

The Sharks finished the season with a final record of 46-27-9 for a total of 101 points, good for second place in the Pacific Division. In fact, their 101 points were good enough for second place in the entire Western Conference while the Golden Knights finished with 93 points — the second-fewest among all NHL playoff teams.

With that, let’s run down some key information you must know ahead of the Sharks first-round matchup.

Betting Odds: San Jose Sharks (-140)

Neither team enters this series with a whole lot of momentum as both squads finished the 2018-19 regular season with rather lackluster stretches. Vegas lost seven of their last eight games to close the season while San Jose lost nine of their final 12 contests.

More from Golden Gate Sports

The Sharks recently returned two of their best players — Joe Pavelski and Erik Karlsson — from injuries and will be looking to capitalize on their newfound health. Thanks in part to a slew of injuries, San Jose slumped badly over the first few months of 2019 falling from the legitimate No. 1 team in the Western Conference to a team now seen as the betting underdogs (by some betting agencies) against the Golden Knights.

It will be up to the play of their star players — including the aforementioned Pavelski and Karlsson as well as Brent Burns — to get the job done and secure a first-round series victory for a Sharks franchise still in search of their first Stanley Cup victory. However, goalie Martin Jones could prove to be the X-factor if he could improve upon his disastrous 2018-19 campaign and prove his doubters wrong in the playoffs.

That remains a very sizable “if,” however.

Either way, expect this series to be an absolute dogfight with the winner emerging worse for wear on the other side. This should be one of the more intriguing first-round matchups in the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs.
