Much like the previous two entries, cornerback remains a huge weak spot for the 49ers. The team addressed the position by signing former Los Angeles Chargers defender Jason Verrett in the offseason but the oft-injured Verrett is hard to count on given his lengthy injury history.

Richard Sherman is still playing at a high enough level, but the No. 2 cornerback position opposite him is extremely weak. Second-year corner Ahkello Witherspoon started most of the year opposite Sherman but struggled mightily in the process.

He received a dreadful 44.9 grade from Pro Football Focus which ranked dead last out of all 112 cornerbacks that were ranked. The team also has 2018 third-round pick Tarvarius Moore who started two games last season but it’s hard to be excited about the team’s current situation.

Jamar Summers showed out with the Birmingham Iron in the AAF over the past few weeks and established himself as one of the top corners in the league. Summers graded out as PFF’s No. 4 corner in the league behind the recently signed Keith Reaser among others.

The Connecticut product is still only 23-years-old and should garner interest from an abundance of NFL teams. If they’re smart, the 49ers should certainly be one of them.
