Oakland Raiders shake things up in post-Combine three-round mock
By Kevin Saito
Oakland’s ineptitude rushing the passer last year was matched only by their ineptitude defending the pass – other than that, their defense was in great shape!
2017 first round pick Gareon Conley showed flashes last season, that he can be an elite level cornerback. He’s inconsistent still – thought that should be expected, given that it was basically his rookie season all over again since his actual rookie season was essentially wiped out by injury.
However, the great Rashaan Melvin experiment didn’t work out on the other side and the mishmash collection of cornerbacks the Raiders employed in 2018 was – less than stellar. Although they had their moments here and there, Oakland’s secondary ranked near the bottom of most major statistical categories making the need for help in the back end of the defense clear and obvious.
Enter Greedy Williams. The six-foot-two, 185-pound corner out of LSU is arguably one of the two best cover corners in the draft according to many – the other being Deandre Baker out of Georgia who is already gone by pick number twenty-four in this mock.
Greedy has good size and having run a 4.37 40, obviously blazing speed. He’s got terrific instincts, good length, and fluidity in movement. He’s versatile enough to play either zone or man and does a great job of recognizing and disrupting a receiver’s route.
Williams put up solid numbers at LSU – posting eight interceptions in 24 career games with the Tigers.
He most definitely has a learning curve and areas of his game he needs to clean up, but Greedy Williams, bookended with Conley in Oakland’s secondary could give the Raiders an elite pair of cornerbacks and one that’s tough to move the ball against.
