Bryce Harper signs with Phillies for a crazy amount of money
By Matthew Rios
Wow that is finally over. Bryce Harper has made his decision and if you were hoping that the Giants signed him, I’m sorry to tell you, it did not happen.
Spring training has started and the San Francisco Giants have their outfield pretty much set up for Bruce Bochy’s last season before retiring from managing in Major League Baseball. While for some time, the Giants and Bryce Harper were rumored to have some mutual interest in signing a deal, that rumor has been demolished with the 6x All-Star signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. I am sure that Giants fans were hoping that they would get the outfielder, but for $330 million, I am glad he is not wearing the orange and black.
The Philadelphia Phillies won the outfielders heart or should I say bank account as they locked him up for 13 years at $330 million. The deal reportedly includes a full no-trade clause and no opt-outs after any season. By signing the deal, he also received a $20 million signing bonus.
It is safe to say that Harper will be with the Phillies for the rest of his career. According to Mark Feinsand on Twitter, Harper is the one that requested not to have any opt-outs. The Giants were in the mix for the All-Star free agent for a while and were reported as one of the last two teams that had a chance to sign him. At one point, the Phillies GM came out and said that the chances of them signing Harper were “remote” which showed a potential deal.

While I am sad that the Giants did not sign him, at the price and terms he got, the Giants might as well have sold him the team.
The Giants need to focus on keeping the players that they have and making the most out of it. Harper has never been a good hitter at what is now Oracle Park, and paying him $330 million to not do that good is not in the Giants best interest.
In the last three seasons, he has had 28 at-bats at Oracle Park and has an average of .107 with only 3 hits. None of those hits were home runs and only one of them was actually an extra-base hit.
While he may not have been that bad for a whole season given the opportunity to play here, I am not taking the risk of having those type of stats all season. We know that the Giants have a low chance of making the playoffs, but adding someone with those numbers may have just hurt the team more than helping them.
Now that the Bryce Harper free agent frenzy is over, the rest of the MLB can go back to worrying about winning games and playing this great sport.
