The latest San Francisco 49ers rumors suggest an Odell Beckham Jr. trade could still be in the works if the New York Giants are open to a deal.

As the early parts of the 2019 offseason roll along, the San Francisco 49ers rumors haven’t quieted down. In fact, according to the latest whispers from around the league, the 49ers could still have their sights set on an Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

We all know the 49ers are desperate to find an upgrade at wide receiver this offseason. They’ve already been at the center of rumors surrounding a potential Antonio Brown trade, and now it appears they’re still in the running for Beckham’s services as well — assuming the New York Giants commit to making him available.

On Monday, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio essentially confirmed the 49ers still have an eye on Beckham. That comes with the caveat that the Giants actually decide to deal him.

"As the season ended, a sense emerged that the 49ers could renew the pursuit of Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. A month and a half later, that sense persists. The 49ers have had real interest in Beckham for nearly a year; the only question is whether the Giants are willing to pull the trigger. As reflected by last week’s bold offseason prediction from Jay Glazer, the Giants may indeed be ready to do so."

As is the case with the Brown situation, the main question that always arises is what the 49ers would have to give up to acquire Beckham. Currently in possession of the No. 2 overall pick, San Francisco may not be willing to part with such a valuable asset. However, if they can put together some sort of enticing package, they may convince the Giants to part with their star receiver.

Either way, I’m sure John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have been mulling the possibilities for months. The 49ers can’t afford to ignore the wide receiver position this offseason. After parting ways with Pierre Garcon, Jimmy Garoppolo is left with Marquise Goodwin and Dante Pettis as his top options out wide. That isn’t an ideal scenario for the young gunslinger to find himself in as he prepares to return from a torn ACL.

Especially with the 2019 free agency class lacking star power at the position, the 49ers may have to get creative in order to supply Garoppolo with a legitimate No. 1 receiver. Sure, he’s got George Kittle to throw to, but the rising star at tight end can’t do it all on his own.

Trading for Beckham would give San Francisco a proven playmaker at wide receiver who can be a big-time target for Garoppolo while putting butts in the seats at Levi’s Stadium. As long as they don’t have to part with the No. 2 overall pick in order to strike a deal, they’d be wise to examine all of their options.

For now, let’s work under the assumption this is a pipe dream. If the Giants do go into full-blown rebuild mode, though, the 49ers better do everything they can to help Beckham escape the Big Apple.
