San Jose Sharks: Who is the 2018-19 midseason MVP?
By Matthew Rios
The San Jose Sharks head into the All-Star Break with plenty of ground to make up in the Pacific Division. If they’re going to get the job done, they’ll need even more out of their midseason MVP, Evander Kane.
In this roller coaster first half of the 2018-19 NHL season, the San Jose Sharks have found themselves in second place in the Pacific Division and fourth overall in the league.
A hockey fan who does not follow the Sharks closely may think that the first half was a breeze and they are exactly where they belong. While that has some truth to it, the Sharks should not have their heads held too high at this 11-day break for the All-Star Game. With the talent that the Sharks have, they should be leading the Pacific Division.
The player who should have his head held high is Evander Kane, the top candidate for the Sharks’ midseason MVP.
Kane was acquired by the Sharks at the trade deadline last season from the Buffalo Sabres in return for a conditional first-round pick, prospect Dan O’Regan and a 2020 fourth-round pick.

Since joining the Sharks, Kane has scored 28 goals, put up 26 assists, and 54 points in only 68 games. However, it’s during the last couple of months in which Kane as really found his groove and began playing like the star we saw at the end of last season.
In the first two months of the season, Kane had only scored seven goals. Over the last two months, Kane has scored 12 goals, including three games in which he scored two goals. In those same two months, Kane has secured 24 points in 25 games. In those 25 games, Kane has only had three games where he did not have a shot on goal, while having 14 games where he recorded 3 or more shots on goal. In the month of January, alone, Kane is a +11.
Kane will be a big part of the second half for the Sharks and will need to continue putting up points in bunches.
Towards the end of the 2017-18 regular season and into the playoffs, the Sharks saw Kane put up big numbers, proving to be a key part of how the Sharks performed in the first round and taking the Vegas Golden Knights into six games in the second round. Expect those same type of numbers as the Sharks will look to catch the Calgary Flames for first place in the Pacific Division and make a deep run into the playoffs.
Evander Kane is my midseason MVP for the Sharks, but feel free to comment below if you believe someone else is more deserving of the honor.
