Oakland Raiders: Mocking the Top 10 picks of the 2019 NFL Draft
By Kevin Saito
Like a few other teams this year, the Jaguars have a quarterback problem. As in, they don’t really have a quarterback. Oh, they have one per se, having inexplicably given Blake Bortles a three-year, $54 million dollar contract – and then got upset and benched him when he proved to be, well, Blake Bortles.
But it leaves the Jags with a horrible conundrum – paying Bortles $18 million a year to ride the pine while still needing a franchise signal caller. Or at the very least, a competent signal caller. Watch for Jacksonville to do their very best to move Bortles and that horrible contract this offseason and watch for it to remain an albatross.
That’s not going to stop them from looking for a quarterback who can replace Bortles and actually win some games. Should they draft a quarterback, the Jaguars will likely take the signal caller widely regarded as the second-best in this year’s class, Missouri’s Drew Lock.
At 6-4, 225 pounds, he’s got terrific size. He’s also got a rifle for an arm and scouts believe he can make all the throws as well as the athleticism and mental makeup to be a capable NFL starter.
Lock will obviously need some polish and shine, but he finished his college career on a strong note, throwing for 3,498 yards and 28 touchdowns against just eight interceptions, on 63 percent passing as a senior at Mizzou.
He’s not flashy, but he can get the job done.
Like the Giants though, the Kyler Murray wild card could change their plans. If Murray is serious about his future in the NFL, the Jaguars and Giants are likely going to be trying to move up to get him – perhaps even mortgaging their future to do so.
If Murray declares for the NFL and the Giants are able to move up to snag him (or just wait and have him fall into their laps at six), look for the Jags to take Haskins, with Lock being their fallback position.
