The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, headed by new head coach Bruce Arians who is fresh out of the broadcaster’s booth, are going to break up the defensive trend of the 2019 Draft.

The Buccaneers have a very big and very expensive decision to make when it comes to quarterback Jameis Winston. His first four years have been a roller coaster ride – both on and off the field. What’s been worse is that, for long stretches, backup Ryan Fitzpatrick has looked like the best quarterback on the roster.

Yet, you can’t deny that with his sheer athleticism, Winston is a quality talent who can make things happen. He’s flashed the ability to be a difference-making quarterback. For Winston, 2019 is simple – look sharp and he’ll earn a fat second contract. Look better as Fitzpatrick’s backup again, and he’ll be looking for work elsewhere.

And now it’s up to Arians to get the best out of him as the Florida State product plays out his fifth-year option.

And to do that, Arians is going to have to shore up an offensive line that wasn’t too good last year. They allowed a total of 41 sacks – 27 of Winston alone in his nine starts and 14 of Fitzpatrick in his seven. Although the line held up well enough to give Tampa Bay the top-ranked passing game in the league, they were at or near the bottom of every statistical category in the running game.

To help remedy the situation and give the line a solid anchor, Tampa Bay drafts Jonah Williams, a massive tackle from Alabama. The 6-5, 302-pounder could step in for former second-rounder Donovan Smith, who’s rookie deal is now up. If Tampa Bay re-signs Smith, Williams could provide some additional depth, not to mention an heir apparent to Demar Dotson, who remains under contract for another two seasons.

It’s not the sexiest pick, but it’s the smart one as Tampa Bay needs to invest in their offensive line to protect their quarterback – even if it’s not Winston.
