Incoming head coach Adam Gase is going to have his work cut out for him as he attempts to surround Sam Darnold with enough talent to let him develop into the franchise quarterback they think he can be.

They obviously need pieces on the offensive side of the ball. Let’s face it, you don’t have the league’s 29th-ranked offense and not need some pieces. The problem was their defense was just as bad, ranking 25th overall and 29th in scoring defense.

With Gase mentoring Darnold, the offense will very likely see better days ahead. Defensively, there is a lot of work to be done. Who they pick at No. 3 is going to have a lot to do with the defensive coordinator Gase chooses, but at the moment, the front runners for the position appear to be Vance Joseph, Gregg Williams, and Chuck Pagano. Or at least, they’re in the conversation.

What that means should one of those three be New York’s new DC, is that it’s entirely possible the Jets will stay in a 3-4 base alignment as it’s the preferred defensive base.

And if that’s the case, look for them to draft Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell. With Leonard Williams playing on an expiring contract in 2019, the Jets will need a replacement should he walk. Should the Jets be able to work out a long-term deal with Williams, that will give them very nice bookends paired with Ferrell.

It’s a pick that makes sense and would give the Jets a potent defensive line.
