Oakland Raiders: Mocking the Top 10 picks of the 2019 NFL Draft
By Kevin Saito
Despite an abysmal 2018 campaign, the San Francisco 49ers have some solid building blocks and the team’s future looks bright. Unfortunately for them, injuries played a significant role in the dumpster fire that was San Francisco’s 2018 season.
Assuming Jimmy Garoppolo and Jerick McKinnon, among others, can come back healthy, this is a team that can go places. And yet, they’re going to need some help on the defensive side of the ball.
If you looked at the raw stats of San Francisco’s passing defense, you might be tempted to conclude that they did okay. And they did – okay. However, it’s somewhat misleading in that opposing quarterbacks really only had one side of the field to work with was they failed to attack Richard Sherman‘s side with regularity. And the other side of the field didn’t hold up quite as well.
After passing on Denzel Ward last year, the 49ers are going to be looking to fortify their secondary by adding a solid, playmaking piece to a unit that was among the worst in interceptions and overall takeaways by drafting LSU’s Greedy Williams.
Paired with Sherman, Williams will have solid, reliable mentor who can help hone his raw skills, considerable as they are, and help mold him into an elite cornerback. With his speed, length, and athleticism, Williams will be an instant upgrade over the likes of Ahkello Witherspoon and Jimmie Ward.
