If the Golden State Warriors met the Sacramento Kings in the first round of the 2019 NBA playoffs, it would be an exciting series for Bay Area bragging rights.

There’s no guarantee that the Golden State Warriors will be the top seed in the NBA at the end of the year. There is also no guarantee that the Sacramento Kings will be in the playoffs at all. Still, if both of those things were to happen–assuming the Kings get in as the eighth seed–then the first round of the playoffs could be really fun.

The Warriors and the Kings have faced off three times this year. Golden State has won three by a combined margin of 11 points.

Sacramento has been a bit of surprise this year, exceeding expectations even though they’re still below .500.  The rise of De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield‘s transformation into one of the league’s elite snipers have both contributed to their much-improved play.

As the defending champs, the Warriors get everybody’s best shot every time they step onto a court. That just comes with the territory of being the best. Opponents go for career nights against them because there’s a different level of focus and intensity that players and teams approach the Warriors with.

Still, there’s a level of fearlessness that the Kings show that is different than every other team.

Young and inexperienced, Sacramento has a lot to prove and their hunger to do so shows. Teams like that can sometimes fail to rise to the occasion against the Warriors, but the Kings look like they’re not going to back down from anyone, especially Golden State.

With Bay Area pride on the line, a series between these two teams could create and intensify a new rivalry. The gritty up-and-coming team from California’s capital battling against the titans of the industry, the two-time champs. It would be the first time these two franchises met in the postseason. The narratives are fun–and I’m sure the players won’t mind the easy travel schedule, either.

The Kings aren’t talented or experienced enough to topple a healthy and engaged Warriors team. And yet, the series would be a great test for both sides. Still, if they want it to happen, then both sides have some work to do to move up in the standings.
