Brandon Belt may soon be swapping jerseys

Does this really come as a surprise? Chances are you guessed this was going to happen, as many other Giants fans did heading into the 2019 MLB Winter Meetings. Put simply, the writing was already on the wall for Brandon Belt and his time in San Francisco.

However, we now have confirmation that the Giants are willing to move the first baseman. Not that we really needed it.

It’s slightly bitter sweet to imagine Belt being dealt, but it makes sense when you put the pieces together. He’s no spring chicken at 30 years old, and has recently been hampered by injuries. To top it off, he’s still owed $48 million over the next three seasons. For a guy who simply can’t stay on the diamond, it’s a hefty price to pay.

If the Giants can find a taker, don’t be surprised to see them pull the trigger. Chances are they’ll be looking to add young assets who can grow within the organization while shedding Belt’s pricey contract. Then again, what team wants to give up valuable prospects for an aging, injury-prone first baseman?

Yes, Belt played an integral role in two of the Giants’ championship runs. However, at this point in time, an amicable divorce may be best for both parties.
