Madison Bumgarner trade appears unlikely

It feels like it’s been months now, but really only a couple of weeks have gone by since Madison Bumgarner’s name has begun spewing out of the rumor mill as a potential trade candidate. The Giants haven’t pull the trigger yet, though.

As it turns out, they may not do so anytime soon. While we can’t completely rule it out, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand believes that Bumgarner could be staying put for the time being.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers have already shown interest in a deal. At this point, though, the Giants may be better off waiting until the middle of the 2019 season. That way, they can hold on to Bumgarner if they emerge as contenders and, if not, have more leverage to deal him to a contender.

Either way, the odds seem to lean towards Bumgarner remaining in San Francisco for the foreseeable future. It is where he honed his skills, emerging as an ace for the Giants and key cog in three separate World Series victories. He’s even got a handful of All-Star appearances to show for his efforts over the last 10 years.

The Giants are rebuilding. Chances are Bumgarner isn’t a part of the grand scheme. For now, though, it looks like he’ll have to hang around unless a deal materializes that’s too good to pass up.
