Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Dallas Cowboys

Clowney is an enticing option, but no pending free agent defensive end offers more intrigue than Demarcus Lawrence. The only problem is there’s a very slim chance the Dallas Cowboys even let him test the open market.

Seeing as this is a dream scenario, though, let’s assume Lawrence becomes available in March.

The 49ers absolutely have to be interested. Upgrading the pass rush is among their top offseason priorities, and signing Lawrence would be a wonderful way to check that item off the to-do list. Not only would he be a major upgrade over anyone currently on the roster, but he’d give them one of the NFL’s elite edge rushers.

Over the last couple of seasons, Lawrence has emerged as a masterful sack artist. Since 2017, he’s racked up 24 sacks and had another eight in 2015. Although the Boise State product battled through some off-field and injury issues early on in his career, Lawrence has finally delivered on the potential that made him a second-round pick back in 2014.

The 49ers have plenty of money to work with this offseason. If they end up spending any of it on a superstar, they should absolutely throw a huge amount at Lawrence. His presence along the defensive line would make a world of difference heading into 2019.
