Jadeveon Clowney, EDGE, Houston Texans

Let’s not pretend like the 49ers don’t need help off the edge. It seemed like they were set at defensive end coming into the year with Solomon Thomas and Arik Armstead on the outsides, but we’ve quickly learned that that’s not quite the case.

That’s why San Francisco needs to target one of the top edge rushers when 2019 free agency gets under way. The first one I want to mention as a potential consideration is Jadeveon Clowney, the former No. 1 overall pick and Texans star.

More from Golden Gate Sports

Yes, Clowney’s NFL career was a mixed bag to begin. Injuries hampered his initial progress, and have slowed him at times in recent years. Despite that, he’s given us plenty of glimpses of his superstar upside and elite ability to hunt opposing quarterbacks. His 27 career sacks would seem to support that assertion.

Now there’s no guarantee Clowney even hits the open market. As expensive as he’s going to be to re-sign, the Texans may not be willing to part ways with the top overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. However, if Houston decides he isn’t worth spending most of their remaining cap space on, Clowney’s agent’s phone could blow up when 2019 free agency gets under way.

Clowney donning a 49ers jersey seems like a pipe dream, but that’s the point. Crazy things happen during free agency every year. Maybe this is the year San Francisco lands a star defensive end.
